Located on a steep slope, this used to be an ancient settlement, according to the 25-century-old tombs found in the village. In 1874, a treasure was found at the nearby sea shore, which consisted of 154 bars of bronze that weighed nearly 60 lb. in total.

The Neo-Gothic catholic church towering over Swarzewo, built during years 1877 - 1880, is famous for a miraculous figure of the Mother of God, Queen of the Polish Sea. The figure chose the place after protestants from Hel had thrown it to the sea. Floating on the water, the figure reached Swarzewo. The Madonna of Swarzewo has lived in many tales and legends. For centuries it has became deeply rooted in the tradition of the Gdańsk Pomerania region. Its gothic representation - a work of anonymous wood-carver - has always been attracting pilgrims and art lovers.

Twice a year the faithful visit their Queen. On the first Sunday after 16 July (holiday of the Mother of God, Queen of Scapular) the traditional fishermen's pilgrimage start, while on the first Sunday after 8 September (Queen of Sowers) the farmers' pilgrimages begin. Swarzewo is said to be 'the Lourdes of Northern Kashubian Land'.
